HSIS ECT - EYFS/KS1 Meeting the Needs of Pupils with EAL

21/05/2024 13:30 - 15:30

Level: All

This session is for primary Early Career Teachers (ECTs), regardless of the Early Career Framework (ECF) programme they are on.

EAL learners learn best when they spend most of their time in class accessing the curriculum alongside their English-speaking peers.

This course will help you consider how children learn English as an additional language and to therefore reflect on how best to support their language-learning needs within the classroom. We will also consider how best to assess children in order to show progress.

The session is complementary to the ECF but it will not cover what is being covered elsewhere by your provider. It provides a chance to network with your ECT colleagues from other schools and share good practice.

There will be opportunities to:

  • consider some of the main factors affecting second language acquisition;
  • develop awareness of systems for assessing pupils’ language development; and
  • consider some practical strategies for supporting pupils.
