EAL: Reading with Understanding

Nationally, the biggest gaps in EAL attainment at KS1 and KS2 are in the area of reading. However, this has very little to do with children’s decoding ability as there is no difference in EAL and non-EAL performance in the Y1 phonics test. This course therefore explores the difficulties children encounter with regard to comprehension when learning EAL.
You will have opportunities to:
- Understand the challenges that texts present to EAL learners in terms of comprehension;
- Consider strategies for developing children’s comprehension skills; and
- Consider the next steps for EAL provision in your school.
